The City of Chino Finance Department is seeking a full-time, highly motivated and detail-oriented Payroll Technician to manage biweekly payroll operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver accurate, timely employee compensation. This critical role helps maintain payroll integrity and supports Citywide financial operations.

What You’ll DoAs our new Payroll Technician
, you will:
- Process and audit bi-weekly payroll including time reporting, leave balances, overtime, earnings, and deductions.
- Review payroll data for accuracy and compliance with policies, labor agreements, and applicable regulations.
- Generate payroll reports and reconcile payroll accounts.
- Coordinate direct deposits, tax payments, and employee deductions.
- Administer specialized payroll transactions including garnishments, retroactive adjustments, and manual payments.
- Prepare journal entries and assist with payroll related financial reporting.
- Support year end payroll activities including W 2 preparation and reporting.
- Respond to payroll inquiries from employees and departments.
- Maintain payroll records in accordance with confidentiality and compliance requirements.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a solid understanding of payroll processing principles and practices
- Understands accounting procedures and financial record keeping
- Is familiar with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Can navigate modern office procedures and ERP systems
And someone who can:
- Accurately process payroll in a high-volume environment
- Identify and resolve discrepancies independently
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Communicate clearly and professionally with staff and departments
- Manage multiple deadlines and priorities effectively
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade.
- Experience: Three (3) years of experience in an accounting position, with an emphasis in payroll processing and automated payroll-processing systems.
Per the City of Chino Nepotism Policy, any employee assigned to Payroll may not have relatives employed by the City.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions- Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standing office equipment, including a computer.
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
- The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 10 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
