The incumbent assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Recreation and Culture Department through reliable performance in ice maintenance, general facility maintenance and janitorial tasks, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices.

The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of ice maintenance, general maintenance and janitorial tasks varying in degree of complexity and responsibility, exercising a certain degree of independent judgement; operating a variety of machinery and equipment such as ice resurfacing machines, ice edgers, and power tools.

He or she will maintain the Arena ice surfaces in proper condition and assume responsibility for the Refrigeration Plant and related equipment; under general supervision of the Arenas Supervisor II or III. The incumbent will perform regular Refrigeration Plant and facility checks, maintaining required readings, logs and reports.

Tasks include minor carpentry and plumbing on facilities, maintaining equipment and grounds as directed; performing janitorial tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, stripping, cleaning and servicing washrooms; washing windows and surfaces.

The incumbent will be required to clear snow; set up and dismantle equipment, fixtures and facilities for special functions; ensure the security of buildings to which the incumbent is assigned.

The incumbent is responsible for meeting and dealing with the public; being polite, courteous and tactful, providing assistance to the public/users in accordance with established policies.

In the absence of a supervisor on shift, the incumbent will have supervisory responsibilities such as training and orientating Caretakers, Cashiers, Skate Patrollers and new Ice Persons, ensuring shift duties are completed thoroughly and safely by all staff on shift. As assigned, the incumbent may have responsibilities for staff scheduling coverage.

The incumbent will perform other related tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Arenas Supervisor II/III.

The incumbent will work within the hours specified and on occasion work overtime, as authorized. Union dues will be deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
