Are you an animal lover with a keen interest in investigations, public safety and education? Do you have experience handling sick, stray, or aggressive dogs? We are seeking up to three casual candidates for Animal Control Bylaw and Enforcement Officer I, to join our Animal Control Program based out of Chilliwack. Under the direction of the Animal Welfare and Regulatory Supervisor, you will work as part of a team providing public education, issuing letters and tickets, investigating animal related complaints, apprehending stray, sick and aggressive animals, while performing a variety of technical administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Completion of grade 12 supplemented by Bylaw Compliance, Enforcement and Investigative Skills course (Level I) as offered by the institutions such as Justice Institute of B.C., Animal Control Training Certificate as offered by institutions such as Langara College, and a minimum of 1 year in a similar role, or have an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of inspectional and investigative work.
  • Knowledge of standard animal welfare and humane animal handling practices and methods.
  • Must be able to quickly acquire operational knowledge of the animal control bylaws and regulations of the Regional District and the applicable sections of the Local Government Act and Community Charter.
  • Must be proficient in the latest computer technology and programs.
  • Ability to deal diplomatically with the public, in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to work effectively alone with minimum supervision, and to work well as part of a team.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public, dog owners, and staff.
  • Must be able to lift and carry bulky objects and work in all types of weather.
  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills, including skills in conflict resolution; and
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s Licence.

The job rate for this casual union position is $39.28 per hour plus 18% in lieu of benefits. This casual position is to relieve or replace employees on an intermittent and temporary basis.

You must be available for shifts from Monday through Saturday anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
