The Nurse Manager has 24 hour responsibility for overall planning, organization, direction and evaluation of patient care operations for a designated area(s) and is key in operationalizing the health system's mission, values and goals to create an environment that supports the nursing professional practice model. The Nurse Manager is responsible for managing, guiding, coaching and evaluating the work performance of patient care staff in their designated area(s), ensuring ongoing collaboration with other departments/areas that relate directly or indirectly to patient care operations.
The Nurse Manager is responsible for decision making within the scope of the unit needs, this may be independently or often in collaboration with the division director or physician lead(s). The Nurse Manager has occasional direct patient care and access to confidential employee and organizational information. This position functions under the direct supervision of the Director of the assigned division.
Duties/Responsibilities Responsible for strategic planning, developing short, mid and long-term goals, facilitating goal achievement and evaluation of goal achievement consistent with the mission and values of the Health System;
Works with physician leads, staff and patients to identify opportunities for improvement in patient care and processes. Demonstrates accountability for achieving targeted thresholds identified on Nursing Dashboards. Demonstrated informatics competency, including the ability to aggregate data, make decisions based on data and compile in to appropriate reports.
Promotes professional development of staff to assure competency. This includes incorporation of evidence based standard of care approaches and assuring completion of all mandatory education, health, and licensure requirements in accordance with licensure regulations. Responsible for maintaining required staffing for unit operations and safety in accordance with specific licensure requirements under the Ohio Administrative Code including required staffing ratios, availability of qualified and clinically competent personnel, and provision of a multi-disciplinary treatment collaboration with physician leads makes recommendations regarding changes to nursing services;
confers with physicians and staff to review and revise policies and procedures; develops and implements policies, procedures, and program objectives; maintains and writes updates to the department policy and procedures in accordance with best practice and licensure regulations, as required by hospital governing bodies.
Participates in chart review, appropriately educating staff of documentation in accordance with patient treatment plan. Works with Utilization Review to ensure compliance with program regulations and identifies and monitors quality assurance measures, including implementation of quality improvement activities.
Participates in departmental and team meetings related to coordination of patient care on various shifts and days. Attends or assumes leadership roles in various hospital committee meetings in order to keep abreast of current issues, trends, and procedures, as well informs and educates staff. Maintains reporting requirements as required per various divisions. Proactively communicates and networks with staff, other health system departments and employees, and the community.
Actively participates in/assumes leadership role in committees, task forces and special projects. Assists with mentoring staff regarding special assignments and new learning opportunities.
