Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a Mid-level
Archaeologist III to join our growing Cultural Resources team. This hybrid position will be based out of our Chico, CA office.

This position is a core member of the Cultural Resources Practice with responsibility for supporting all aspects of project implementation as well as leading teams, tasks and/or full projects. This is a regular, full-time, salaried position that will report to a Cultural Resources Team Manager. This position may serve as a Field Director and/or Principal Investigator as well as being a crew lead, independently author cultural resource reports, and analyze precontact artifacts, particularly lithics, from the Klamath Basin/Northern California region based on work experience and education.

You will be an integral member of our cultural resources team supporting the decommissioning of the Lower Klamath Project, a precedent setting dam removal and salmon habitat restoration project on the Klamath River that includes artifact analysis.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Have an established familiarity with the data collection and analysis methodologies related to precontact lithics including but not limited to specialized studies that include typo logical/technological studies (reduction stages), raw material sourcing via petrography/geochemistry's, and use-wear/residue analysis via microscopy particularly when applied to lithics from the Klamath Basin and/or Northern California regions.
  • Managing projects with small- to large-scale field efforts (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring) and intensive schedules
  • Managing and executing archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and/or GIS mapping.
  • Operating as primary author or senior reviewer, as appropriate.
  • Managing large-scale compliance monitoring projects requiring adherence to permit conditions
  • Works under supervision of senior staff but is capable of completing all but the most complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Supervising personnel in the field, office, and laboratory, as needed.
  • Liaising and developing positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act, as well as other state and local regulations protecting cultural resources.
  • Organizing data in an efficient and clear manner.
  • Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities to manager.
  • Operating as primary point of contact for clients and resource agencies on projects, as needed
  • Performing client management duties such as recurring status meetings, milestone check ins, and day-to-day interfacing
  • Performing project management including overseeing project budgets, invoicing, and project set up.
  • Willingness to make significant contributions to the archaeological record of the Lower Klamath Project, the largest dam removal project in the United States.
