Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician - Photo Biomodulation (PBM) Project

Department: Clinic

Reports To: Clinic Supervisor & Director of Clinical Leadership

FLSA Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Wage Range: $21-$24 per hour

Summary:

The Ophthalmic Technician will facilitate the smooth and efficient processing of new and returning patients through testing, treatment procedures, and support of the Photo Biomodulation (PBM) project. The role requires anticipating the needs of both patients and providers, modeling pleasant, professional, and collaborative behavior, and ensuring strict compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Photo Biomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive therapeutic treatment that uses targeted light wavelengths to support cellular function and promote tissue health. In ophthalmic care, PBM is used as an adjunctive therapy to help manage certain ocular conditions by improving cellular energy production and reducing inflammation. The treatment is designed to be safe, efficient, and comfortable for patients, while supporting overall clinical outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Greet patients in a professional, pleasant, and welcoming manner.
  • Obtain, document, and update patient history accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Perform pre-examination testing, including auto-refraction (A/R), confrontational visual fields, stereo vision, color vision, lensometry, visual acuity, pupil assessment, motility, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and dilation.
  • Conduct diagnostic testing, including OCT, fundus photography, slit-lamp photography, and visual field testing.
  • Assist with and support Photo Biomodulation (PBM) treatments in accordance with established protocols and provider direction.
  • Clean and prepare exam rooms following established sanitization and infection-control protocols.
  • Communicate consistently with other technicians and clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
Auxiliary Functions
  • Refer patient questions regarding diagnoses, test results, or treatment plans, including PBM, to the provider as appropriate.
  • Monitor, maintain, and stock exam and procedure rooms to ensure readiness for patient care.
  • Track, stock, and report supply inventory, including materials related to PBM treatments.
  • Assist providers in satellite offices as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support clinic operations and patient care.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of clinical testing equipment, PBM technology, and proper testing and treatment procedures.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, protocols, and procedures to ensure consistency, compliance, and quality of care within the team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to exercise sound initiative, judgment, and decision-making in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant, professional, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all patient, company, and employee information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with patients, providers, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while remaining accountable to team goals.
  • Ability to logically assess clinic issues, establish facts, and recommend appropriate resolutions.
  • Ability to maintain an organized work environment and meet departmental and organizational deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative and flexibility within a team environment.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) credential preferred.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

Environment: Primarily a temperature-controlled facility.

  • Work may require prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate clinical testing equipment, a keyboard, mouse, and standard office equipment.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate in person, by phone, or over video.
