Working under the supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher-level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is a licensed professional responsible for performing a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations. The CLS I provides medical staff with essential laboratory data for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and disease within the university setting.
Typical assignments include diagnostic testing ordered by licensed practitioners (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy tests, blood tests, antibiotic sensitivity tests), specimen collection and preparation, interpretation of test outcomes, calibration and maintenance of equipment, and quality assurance in compliance with state and federal regulations, including the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent, as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.
- Equivalent post‑secondary education, training, and experience may be accepted.
- Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (required).
- Experience in a Student or University Health Setting (e.g., university or student health center, college‑aged populations).
- Cross‑Training in Multiple Lab Areas (e.g., hematology + immunology + microbiology, support of CLIA‑waived testing or phlebotomy when needed).
- Commitment to Continuous Learning (ongoing education, conferences, certifications, quality improvement involvement).
Pay Plan: 12/12
Salary Range: $27.39 - $100.10 per hour. This appointment does not include health benefits for applicants not currently employed with CSU, Chico. Benefit eligibility for on‑campus employees will be reviewed based on their current benefit status.
The position is considered a sensitive position based on CSU guidelines; the incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data. The role is also a designated position under the California State University’s Conflict of Interest Code and may require filing a Form 700 if a procurement card is issued.
