The Institute for Nonviolence Chicago’s mission is to end the cycle of violence using Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles and teachings of nonviolence. Informed by a philosophy of nonviolence, the organization will establish caring and sustained relationships with participants engaged in the cycle of violence. We will emphasize partnerships with community members, leaders, social service providers, and local law enforcement to reduce community levels of violence.
We will help create a safer, healthier environment for young adults, youth, and their families. The approaches will include Community Violence Intervention (CVI) / Street Outreach, Individualized Service Provision, Victim Support Services, and Nonviolence Training.
- Supervise assigned staff in accordance with agency policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including hiring, training, and performance appraisals.
- Create a workplace culture aligned with the agency’s mission, vision, guiding principles, code of ethics, and values.
- Participate in developing the department’s annual and long‑range plan.
- Lead recruitment and enrollment of participants, conducting individual interviews, assessment/intake, and gathering personal background information.
- Facilitate an in‑depth orientation process.
- Maintain knowledge of Victim Services goals, objectives, expected outcomes, and reporting.
- Work effectively with diverse staff, community partners, and served populations.
- Use technology to manage program components, track deliverables, services, and outcomes.
- Ensure Victim Advocates document efforts and activities in the database; review case notes weekly to improve documentation and guide future efforts.
- Oversee crisis response to shootings and homicides, notifying Advocates and providing guidance during 24/7 availability.
- Support Advocates in preparing for team and partnership meetings, coordinating schedules, and assigning staff to outreach activities.
- Maintain a caseload of 10‑15 participants, monitoring attendance, evaluating responses, advocating for services, connecting resources, intervening in crises, and providing personal support.
- Communicate progress in weekly interdisciplinary meetings, disseminating results and obstacles to the team and families, and identifying program impacts.
- Prepare participants’ exit strategies by reviewing goals, coordinating discharge, orienting and training family members, and providing resources.
- Develop partnerships with resources that strengthen participant support and hold partners accountable.
- Receive direction and feedback from Victim Services and Outreach Program Manager.
- Coordinate with Outreach Program Manager and Outreach Supervisor regarding cases and community activities, ensuring coordination with the full Outreach team.
- Perform other assigned duties.
- Flexible schedule; full‑time position requiring night and weekend hours.
- At least 3 years’ experience supporting and collaborating with victims of violence.
- Prior experience supervising individuals from diverse ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Experience developing and retaining relationships with other service providers.
- High level of interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and effective verbal and written communication.
- Crisis intervention training or knowledge.
- Knowledge of Chicago and communities with histories of violence.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding participants and staff.
- Ability to understand and follow safety/security practices and work in high‑pressure situations.
- BS in a Human Services field (e.g., Sociology, Urban Studies, Social Work) or equivalent experience.
- No pending criminal cases.
- Valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and good driving record; personal vehicle required.
- Pass a drug screening and background check prior to hiring.
Compensation is commensurate with years of related experience, position requirements, and candidate qualifications. The average salary for the position is $55,000.
