Position: TELECOMMUNICATIONS ELECTRICIAN - BUREAU OF TECHNOLOGY (COUPE IBEW 134)

job summary

under the direction of the telecommunications electrician foreman, the employee plans layout and wiring of any array of various telecommunications systems and equipment. They install, repair, modify, and rearrange new and/or existing systems and equipment to satisfy department requests for telephone and data services. The employee minimizes material waste, avoids unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable work, and aligns with established standards, specifications, and local electrical codes applied to telecommunications.

Additional duties are performed as assigned.

knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics
  • thorough and extensive knowledge of the principles, methods, maintenance and technologies related to the installation and repair of telecommunication lines and equipment.
  • knowledge of city, state, and local building codes as they relate to electrical and telecommunication construction.
  • skill in installing, operating, testing, dismantling, and repairing all types of telecommunications equipment used in building construction.
  • skill in identifying electrical/electronic problems and repairing and maintaining systems, motors, lighting, interrupters, power supplies, control, and low‑voltage systems.
  • skill in interpreting blueprints, circuit descriptions, and computing testing results.
  • proficiency interpreting and following blueprints, electrical diagrams, and local electrical codes.
  • skill in installing all conduit systems, wiring, electrical devices, telecommunication and data systems, motors, switches, panels, motor control centers, and switchboards.
  • this position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout cook county.
minimum qualifications
  • successful completion of an approved and recognized apprenticeship program pursuant to attaining journeyman status as a telecommunications electrician.
  • five (5) years of full‑time work experience at the journeyman level.
  • valid driver’s license.
  • degrees awarded outside of the united states with the exception of those awarded in one of the united states territories and canada must be credentialed by the world education services (wes), educational credential evaluators (ece), or a national association of credential evaluation (naces) member organization.
physical requirements

medium work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or more than negligible force and up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
