Position Summary

UIC is seeking a Journeyman Electrician to join the Technology Solutions team. The role involves installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing all aspects of communication systems, including raceways, cabling infrastructure, and equipment for various types of Network and Analog Facilities, according to industry standards and electrical code. Knowledge of IP-based data communications systems, IP-based/PBX telecommunication systems, traditional analog systems, and emergency phone systems is required.

Work encompasses both indoor and outdoor environments.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Install, test, troubleshoot and repair both fiber and copper communications cabling for voice and data services using campus cabling infrastructure.
  • Rearrange, install or remove surface raceways, cable trays and conduits to support layer 1 cabling.
  • Maintain and install hardware such as Centrex, VoIP and emergency phones, network switches, wireless hardware, and security hardware.
  • Communicate and coordinate with network engineering staff, admins, and clients, verbally, in writing, and electronically.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Track time, materials, circuits and perform other administrative tasks as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Required
  • Minimum of four (4) years/48 months of actual work in the trade as a journeyman electrician, including apprenticeship or vocational training, covering typical electrician duties.
  • Three (3) years/36 months of experience/training in maintaining systems supporting telephony, voice, data communications, and alarm systems, gained within the last five (5) years/60 months.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with networking, Cisco switches, and Windows Server administration.
    • Knowledge of traditional telephony circuits such as PRI's, DSL, POTS, and Centrex circuits.
    • Understanding of IP-based telephony and network infrastructure.
    • Proficiency with certification test instruments, network troubleshooting tools, fiber optic testing, and analog cabling analysis instruments.
    • Ability to read floor plans, organize job processes, and track time and materials on work orders.
    • Ability to install conduit and surface-mounted raceways.
    • Commitment to a respectful work environment.
    • Knowledge of TIA/EIA Structured Cabling Standards and Electrical Codes.
    • Skilled use of telecommunications electrical and construction power tools and hand tools.
    • Experience installing inside plant and outside plant copper and fiber optic cabling.
