Location
Chicago, IL (field-based, customer sites)
The roleWe are hiring a Field Service Technician II to troubleshoot, repair, and optimize industrial secondary packaging machinery at customer sites. This is a high-autonomy role for someone who can walk in, diagnose fast, communicate clearly with customers, and get equipment running safely and reliably. You will work across mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems and use foundational PLC skills to support troubleshooting and minor program updates.
Whatyou will do
Technical service and repair
- Diagnose complex issues on packaging equipment (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic)
- Perform installations, preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and upgrades
- Lead on-site installation activity and coordinate crews when needed
- Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals to plan and execute service calls
- Use PLC skills to connect, diagnose, and make minor logic/program changes
- Conduct film audits and resolve film-related operating issues (stretch/shrink applications)
Customer experience and commercial support
- Deliver clear, face-to-face communication on findings, repair progress, and timing
- Build trusted relationships through on-site and phone support
- Identify opportunities for maintenance plans, retrofits, spare parts kits, and equipment replacement, then partner with Sales to follow through
Documentation and compliance
- Submit complete documentation on time: service reports, parts and service quotes, expenses, and inventory updates
- Label, document, and return defective parts
- Follow all safety policies and site requirements, every time
Teamwork and leadership
- Collaborate with local and national service teams to support customer accounts
- Train and mentor junior technicians and maintenance staff
Experience
- Associate’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical or Electrical field or 5+ years of recent, relevant experience with secondary packaging equipment
- Proven repair experience on packaging field products, including strong understanding of:
Technical skills
- Basic PLC capability (write simple logic, interface with equipment, minor program edits); formal PLC training preferred
- Strong ability to read electrical and mechanical schematics
- Comfortable with Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Salesforce
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; valid registration and insurance
- Able to pass pre-employment screenings (background check, drug test)
- Forklift proficiency required
- Physical ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs and handle a 50 lb toolbox; frequent kneeling, standing, bending
- Must supply and maintain personal tools and test equipment (calibration, security, and safety)
- You are calm under pressure and can diagnose quickly without guesswork
- You communicate clearly with customers and document thoroughly
- You take ownership, work independently, and know when to escalate
- You enjoy mentoring others and raising the bar for the team
