Job InformationJob Summary
In support of management, the Building Trades Locksmith Foreman plans, schedules, assigns, distributes and monitors workload of the journeyman locksmith staff and supporting contractors. Will perform duties throughout University buildings, property and facilities, in accordance with University standards and procedures. During the routine absence of the Supervisor (vacation, sick, personal holiday), the Foreman will act in place of the Supervisor. This position does not require the Foreman to hire, fire, promote or issue disciplinary action.
Responsibilities- Performs all duties of a Journeyman Locksmith while serving as Foreperson for the Locksmith Shop.
- Provides guidance and technical assistance to journeymen employees.
- Under the direction of the Supervisor, is responsible for planning, scheduling, assigning, distributing, and monitoring the work of assigned employees to ensure timely performance and compliance with applicable and University standards.
- Keeps supervisor current with issues and impediments to the progress of work assignments.
- Prepares job estimates and sketches; reviews and annotates construction drawings and schedules of material.
- Orders and inventories material and equipment. Maintains associated records. Prepares routine reports.
- Introducing new employees to the work environment. Identifies and provides training to employees on an ongoing basis.
- Use computers to enter and access job-related information.
- As required by work issues, it will be required to carry and respond to pager and/or cell phone after hours.
- Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
- Undertakes training related to job responsibilities and duties as deemed necessary by the University.
- Capable of and may perform all duties of the Journeyman Building Engineer and Refrigeration/Building Engineer as required in accordance with shop practices.
- Performs other job-related duties as may be assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) from an accredited institution, required.
- Completion of job-related apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training required.
- Five years journeyman-level experience in building systems and air-conditioning maintenance or an equivalent combination of position-related education and experience required.
- Working knowledge and familiarity with Chicago Building Code requirements relevant to craft, preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements required.
- Ability to direct the activities of subordinate staff required.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction documents (plans and drawings).
- Demonstrated ability to write routine reports, required.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing, required.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position, required.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and leadership skills, required.
- Previous foreman or lead experience that included directing a work crew or multiple work crews, as well as planning, estimating and scheduling experience, preferred.
- Working knowledge of the use of computerized maintenance management systems, preferred.
- Current valid driver's license and must successfully complete the University’s Motor Vehicle Records check process required.
- Other licenses or certificates needed for this position as required by law, changes in the law or other regulatory agency requirements required.
Physical Requirements
- Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend, reach, and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of working at heights as required, be able to enter and work within tight spaces, and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures.
- This position requires periods of overtime.
