DSS Campus Safety
The Community Services Officer assists campus, students, faculty, staff, and visitors of either campus, elementary, and/or the high school environment. The CSO maintains a safe and secure environment and performs a variety of duties in providing a safe learning and work environment for students, staff, and visitors and protecting property. The Community Services Officer serves as a link between law enforcement and the school, school administration, teachers, parents, and students.
This position will be assigned to UCPD, the Charter Schools, and the Lab School.
Essential staff designation:
Essential staff are required to report to work to ensure that University operations continue during emergencies, inclement weather, or conditions that require closure or restricted operations. Essential staff may be required to report for unscheduled shifts and work more than regularly scheduled hours.
- Assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors whenever needed and works to maintain a safe and secure environment for the entire community.
- Patrols campuses on foot and inspects hallways, stairways, and all other public areas for fire/safety hazards. Reports any unusual condition or malfunctioning equipment.
- In conjunction with the University Police Department, assists with investigations of all criminal and suspicious occurrences on school campuses and acts/reports same.
- Responsible for visitor management of the Charter School: checking identification, logging visitor information, and monitoring after-hours access.
- Works with guidance counselors and student support staff to assist with referrals to service agencies as needed.
- Enforces photo y and parcel inspection policy and all University of Chicago policies.
- In emergencies, coordinates with emergency services, notifies appropriate personnel, evacuates, secures buildings, and assists in disaster situations.
- Responds to non-hazardous, non-emergency calls for service (e.g., lost property, safety escorts, building close procedures, motorist assistance).
- Writes reports documenting incidents and calls for service; maintains logs and records; enters and retrieves information using a computer.
- Supports administrative functions and assists with projects; provides traffic control during events and school dismissals.
- Provides information and assistance to the general public; answers inquiries and responds to requests for services; maintains professional interactions with stakeholders.
- Establishes and maintains partnerships with school administrators and security personnel.
- Performs specialized and technical non-sworn duties in support of the University of Chicago Police Department in patrol, community services, training, and other areas as assigned.
- Completes incident reports and makes appropriate notifications; assists with fire alarm drills and dissemination of information regarding fire alarms.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).
Work ExperienceMinimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
CertificationsPreferred Qualifications include:
Education (Preferred)- Associates degree from an accredited college.
- One year of successful experience performing in a position which requires a high level of service-oriented public contact.
- Prior security and law enforcement experience in a K-12 academic environment.
- Valid driver’s license; good driving record.
- Commitment to serving the interests of the University community and Department goals.
- Ability to absorb and interpret information while maintaining department goals.
- Professionalism, credibility, and customer service in all contacts.
- Remain calm and objective in stressful situations; make timely and sound decisions; communicate effectively with tact.
