Overview

Community Service Officer, University of Chicago Police Department

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief within the University of Chicago Police Department, the Community Service Officer will assist students, faculty, staff and visitors in a University campus environment and maintain a safe and secure environment for the entire Campus community; deliver a combination of safety and security functions including conducting foot patrol and providing presence on Campus grounds; participate in investigation of incidents in coordination with University of Chicago Police law enforcement personnel, maintaining accurate and up-to-date reports;

provide security and emergency training; and supportive of the mission of the University by recommending security strategies and assisting with special duties and projects. Employees in these positions are designated as essential staff and may be required to report for unscheduled shifts during emergencies, inclement weather, or campus closures.

Responsibilities
  • Assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors and helps maintain a safe and secure environment for the campus community.
  • Patrols campuses on foot, inspects public areas for fire/safety hazards, and reports unusual conditions or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Assists with investigations of criminal and suspicious occurrences in conjunction with the University Police Department and documents findings.
  • Manages visitor processes including checking IDs, logging visitor information, and monitoring after-hours access.
  • Works with guidance counselors and student support staff to assist students and make referrals to service agencies as needed.
  • Enforces campus policies (, parcel inspection, and other University policies).
  • Responds to emergencies by coordinating with appropriate services, evacuating areas, and assisting in disaster situations.
  • Responds to non-hazardous, non-emergency calls (e.g., lost property, safety escorts, building close procedures, motorist assistance).
  • Writes incident reports and other written correspondence; maintains logs and uses computer systems for information entry and retrieval.
  • Supports administrative functions and assists with department projects; provides traffic control during events and incidents.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public and enforces campus rules; escorts and safety information dissemination as needed.
  • Performs security-related drills and collaborates with campus administrators and security personnel.
  • Provides safety escort services upon request and participates in video monitoring and review as assigned.
Education and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

  • Education:

    Associates degree from an accredited college (preferred).
  • Experience:

    2-5 years in a related role; previous security or public-facing service experience is advantageous; experience in a K-12 academic environment is a plus.
  • Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Proficiency with desktop computer, pager, two-way radio, fingerprint equipment, camera, copy machine, and telephone.
  • Competencies:

    Strong public service orientation, professionalism, communication, teamwork, decision-making, and ability to work under stress; ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Working Conditions
  • May work 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts; exposure to high-stress environments.
  • Physical requirements include walking, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing, and running as needed; ability to travel to on-campus and off-campus locations.
  • Operate vehicles and bicycles; use standard office and security equipment; may require use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work in inclement weather and handle strenuous physical exertion.
