Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents
  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Minimum Requirements

Position Title: Calumet Analytical Lab Intern

Department: Monitoring and Research Department

Location: Calumet Water Reclamation Plant, 400 West 130th Street, Chicago, IL 60628

Description: The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a laboratory intern to serve in the Monitoring and Research Department. The candidate will learn analytical processes used to monitor wastewater process streams. They will become familiar with the analysis of nutrients, oxygen demand, mercury and volatile acids using a variety of analytical instruments. They will also become familiar with the operations of a wastewater treatment facility and its role on the reduction of pollutants in the environment.

Along with treatment processes the candidate will learn the role of the District in environmental monitoring and flood control activities and their impact on improving the environment and increasing bio‑diversity.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
  • Experience in general laboratory and safety practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to coordinate and cooperate in a group environment.
  • Ability to lift sample containers up to 20 liters in capacity.
  • Ability to shake and pour sample containers up to one gallon in capacity.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Educational Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a degree seeking program majoring in chemistry, environmental science, chemical engineering, or biology.
  • Has completed at least two semesters of laboratory sciences focused on chemistry or biology.
