COLLEGE LABORATORY ASSISTANT II - BIOLOGY (FULL-TIME)
CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO - TRUMAN COLLEGE

Truman College is seeking a Full-Time College Laboratory Assistant II to join the Biology department. Under minimal supervision, the College Laboratory Assistant II performs para-professional work in a science laboratory in the preparation, storage and maintenance of chemical and biochemical reagents, materials, and apparatus; takes general responsibility for operation of laboratory; and performs related duties as requested.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Inventories and maintains necessary supplies for college courses in biology, chemistry, physics, physical science and related subjects.
  • Writes requisitions for chemicals, supplies, equipment, and laboratory animals.
  • Prepares reagents with qualitative and quantitative specifications.
  • Maintains and does minor repairs on various laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrates and prepares scientific instrumentation for class use.
  • Prepares bacteriological culture media and prepares class experiments by making solutions, organizing the necessary equipment and pre-testing it before it is demonstrated to the class.
  • Feeds and provides daily care for live laboratory animals.
  • Maintains the laboratory in an orderly and clean manner that ensures safety rules.
  • Writes educational documentation as needed.
  • Enforces safety rules in the laboratory and aides the instructor and students in demonstrations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent, supplemented by two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of routine laboratory procedures and safety.
  • May be required to work on Saturdays.
  • Good knowledge of biological and physical science laboratory methods.
  • Knowledge of scientific instrumentation used in science laboratories.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to use a personal computer in all inventory and record keeping responsibilities.
  • Ability to instruct students on use of laboratory equipment through use of strong organizational skills, supervisory skills and good verbal communication.
