About the Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS)

The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) provides the infrastructure to advance interdisciplinary research and training in health and social sciences at the University of Chicago. Housed under the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division's office, the Center attracts participation from across the University, including the Biological Sciences Division and Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM), Social Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, Booth School of Business, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, Crown School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, National Opinion Research Center (NORC), and Argonne National Labs.

The Center supports and promotes innovation and collaboration as well as excellence in research, scholarship and training. With 140 faculty associates from virtually all schools and divisions of the university, CHeSS serves as an incubator of ideas and supporter of research in health and the social sciences, sponsors seminars and workshops on campus, invites nationally‑known scholars and policymakers to speak on a variety of topics, supports the writing and submission of grant applications and fundraising proposals, coordinates new research initiatives and projects, manages several training programs and provides expert research methods consultation during formative and operational phases of investigations.

Job Summary

The CHeSS Methods Core seeks an entry‑level Research Analyst. The analyst will use statistical programming skills in Stata, R, and SAS to perform advanced data management, analysis, and manipulation of large, complex datasets. The role supports research related to healthcare economics, health services, and health‑care delivery science, and collaborates with investigators from all stages of project development, from study design and implementation to results reporting and manuscript preparation.

Additional responsibilities include supporting CHeSS’s educational mission through training activities, preparing lecture and workshop materials, and serving as a teaching assistant as needed. The analyst will also support some administrative tasks for the Center in the first year, including processing financial transactions, managing facilities, and liaising with IT services.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in‑depth quantitative analyses for both internally and externally funded health services research projects, including observational studies and randomized controlled trials.
  • Work with diverse data sources—including claims data (including the Merative Market Scan Research Databases), surveys, administrative records, and electronic health records—to evaluate health outcomes and identify opportunities for cost reduction among various patient populations.
  • Prepare statistical analyses and summary measures, and generate detailed reports and presentations tailored to working teams, funders, and broader audiences.
  • Develop impactful data visualizations to communicate key findings and insights clearly and effectively to stakeholders.
  • Participate in training and educational activities, such as preparing teaching materials and serving as a teaching assistant for the Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training.
  • Support CHeSS administrative tasks, including serving as a liaison between CHeSS and contacts in other units such as EVS, plant, and IT services, managing CHeSS space and equipment, triaging emails to the CHeSS general account, supporting day‑to‑day financial transactions, helping plan CHeSS events, and serving as backup for staffing workshops and trainings.
  • Maintain technical and administrative support for research projects.
  • Assist with recruiting and scheduling research subjects; develop or amend study protocols; develop data collection tools; build databases; and provide general administrative support. Maintain general awareness of research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific fields.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
