Duties: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the repair, testing and maintenance of various equipment at District facilities including, plant process control equipment, power distribution systems, voice and data communication networks, including telemetry.

Original - Examination

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of experience in the repair and calibration of electronic process instrumentation.
Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis. College‑level or other approved post‑secondary training in instrumentation technology, electrical/electronics technology or electronic engineering technology may be substituted for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 60% and a performance test weighted 40%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will assess candidates’ knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as testing, calibrating, and maintaining instrumentation (sensors); testing and maintenance of communication systems including wire, fiber and radio; process control and automated systems; power distribution relays and related instrumentation; electricity and electronic concepts; occupational hazards and safety precautions; interpretation of electrical drawings; and interpersonal and written communication.

The performance test will assess candidates’ ability to demonstrate their skills in performing Electrical Instrument & Testing Mechanic tasks in areas such as those listed above.

Examination Process

All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, April 3, 2026 should contact the Employee Selection Office at .

WRITTEN TEST

The written test will be administered on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL.

Candidates should report at 10:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.

PERFORMANCE TEST

The performance test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026 and any other dates that may be necessary to accommodate the number of candidates. Candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.

Original Entrance - Appointments

Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
