The Same Day Surgery Unit (SDS) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a multifaceted pre‑op and post‑op unit. We strive to not only assist the patient through the surgical experience but also involve the families. Our nurses provide care for a variety of different surgical procedures ranging from urologic procedures to more complicated surgeries such as kidney transplants, in which care is provided to both the donor and the recipient.
We also pre‑op and recover some of our total joint replacement surgeries that are discharged on the same day of surgery. These patients require extensive discharge teaching which includes family involvement. The SDS is a fast‑paced unit that requires exceptional organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills. This unit allows nurses to advance their skillset by combining cutting‑edge technology and critical thinking skills to provide evidence‑based comprehensive nursing care to our highly complex patient population.
It also requires our team to collaborate with other members of our surgical services teams to ensure the best patient outcomes.
