About The Department:
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 114 clinical providers, with care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and seven off-site locations. We have more than 60,000 outpatient visits, 25,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,000 gynecological surgeries per year. Teaching, research and high-quality clinical care are top priorities. The residency and fellowship programs are highly ranked and have a history of training leaders in healthcare.

The department also has a significant research enterprise, including population health studies and research in tumor biology, fibroid research, and hypertensive diseases in pregnancy.

Job Summary:

The APP/APN uses best practices and patient knowledge to exercise autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research. The APP/APN will provide high-quality medical services across multiple areas (well-woman care, problem visits, post-operative care, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures). The role includes substantial involvement with the Labor & Delivery unit, rounding and patient management, under supervision or alternate supervision of attending physicians.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with the consulting physician and multidisciplinary health team, including identification, management and/or referral of health problems.
  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
  • Take patient histories, perform physical examinations, and document in the patient record; screen for hospital admission needs; refer to other disciplines as indicated; write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries; obtain psychosocial history; develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and effects of procedures to the patient.
  • Evaluate outcomes of care and initiate changes in nursing approach as needed.
  • Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements.
  • Assume accountability for patient care decisions, prescribe medications per delegated authority, prescribe treatments, delegate tasks, and maintain a safe patient environment.
  • Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of care.
  • Choose appropriate communication approaches to achieve desired patient care outcomes.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and knowledge update.
  • Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
  • May participate in community health education and basic science/clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
  • May prepare statistical reports and analyses highlighting progress, trends and recommendations.
  • Serve as a clinical skills resource for staff on or off the unit.
  • May participate in teaching students and residents in procedures specific to the clinical setting.
  • Practice privileges are detailed in each APN/APP Delineation of Privileges.
  • Develop patient education programs to support informed health care decisions.
  • Evaluate goals and outcomes with attention to safety, quality and cost-effectiveness for patient and organization.
  • Coordinate APP training and professional development; respond to adverse drug reactions with emphasis on vulnerable populations (infants, children, pregnant/lactating women, older adults).
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Education & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • College or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Current/state-eligible for Illinois licensure/registration. Eligible to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
