Gastroenterology – Interventional Advanced Practice Provider

Rush University Medical Center, a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution and the teaching hospital for Rush Medical and Nursing Colleges, located in downtown Chicago, invites applications for the position of Interventional Gastroenterology Advanced Practice Provider.
Under the supervision and in collaboration with board-certified gastroenterologists, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers high-quality care to patients with digestive health concerns. This role is ideal for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) or Physician Assistants (PAs) looking for a Post-Anesthesia Care (PACU) type position.
Duties & Responsibilities- The primary responsibility includes managing the patient’s immediate post-operative recovery, ensuring they are stable and comfortable while monitoring vital signs, pain levels and complications.
- Other job responsibilities include inpatient follow ups and outpatient clinic.
- Monday – Friday: 7:00am-5:00 PM; 40 hours of patient-facing care per week. No weekends, holidays, or on call required.
- Experience of 2 years or more of previous Advanced Practice Provider experience in Gastroenterology, Surgery, Intensive Care is required for this role.
- APRN Candidates will require Acute Care Certification.
- Clinical Care & Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive health histories and physical exams focused for pre procedure care.
- Recover patients from interventional GI procedures with ability to manage post procedure complications.
- Assist attending physician with outpatient clinic.
- Conduct rounds on inpatients with GI diseases like acute pancreatitis and its complications, choledocholithiasis and other biliary diseases, and post procedure follow ups.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests including labs, pathology, and imaging.
- Prescribe medications and therapies in accordance with state laws and clinical guidelines.
- Patient Education & Advocacy
- Educate patients and families on GI conditions, lifestyle modifications, and preventive care.
- Promote shared decision-making and informed consent.
- Refer patients to community resources and support groups as needed.
- Care Coordination & Continuity
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and care coordinators to ensure seamless patient care.
- Provide follow-up care and monitor chronic GI conditions.
- Triage patient calls and messages, ensuring timely responses and interventions.
- Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse or eligible to obtain a licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) application process.
- Master of Science in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing practice with clinical specialty appropriate to position.
- Current certification by American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP).
- Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Physician Assistant/Associate or eligible to obtain a licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) application process.
- Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant/Associate Program.
- Current certification from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
