II. GENERAL SUMMARY

The registered professional nurse, level II, uses critical thinking skills, professional judgment and leadership to anticipate, plan, direct and evaluate the care of the patients provided by a team of ancillary personnel, and serves as a resource in a specific specialty area.

These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center, and the attributes of Careful Nursing. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.

III. DESCRIPTION

Duties and Responsibilities:

50% of Time Spent

  • Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, professional judgment and the attributes of Careful Nursing to provide care for an assigned population of patients.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support during behavioral health events.
  • Support the therapeutic environment by promoting patient safety and managing difficult behaviors appropriately.
  • Synthesizes information and resources to care for complex, higher acuity patients.

10% of Time Spent

  • Plans for discharge and determines need for care within the community to assure continuity in level of service for the patient and family.
  • Plans care and delegates tasks to ancillary personnel based on patient assessment.
  • Administer medications, including psychiatric medications (such as antipsychotics or antidepressants) and treatments for physical health conditions.
  • Evaluates patient response to care provided and make changes in the plan for care as needed.
  • Work closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care while also educating patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies for managing both mental and physical health.

  • Discusses patient progress, problems and needs with physician and multidisciplinary team members on a regular basis to ensure that goals for discharge are met.

Assures high levels of quality of care through compliance with regulatory standards, reference to current research related to patient care outcome and participation in the data collection and analysis process of ongoing quality monitoring.

Provides care for all patients utilizing the attributes of Careful Nursing.

  • Maintains a safe patient care environment by identifying potential safety hazards and intervening appropriately.
  • Operates and maintains equipment used in patient care in a safe manner;
    Maintains a neat and aesthetically pleasing patient care environment;
    Understands and follows infection control requirements in the care of patients;
    Understands and complies with confidentiality and privacy requirements in the care of patients.
IV. JOB SPECIFICATIONS

A. REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Current RN License in the State of Illinois required. Current CPR certification required ACLS certification preferred Knowledge of psychiatric and addictive disorders, and their treatment in a structured outpatient setting required.

Knowledge of patients' growth and development needs required.
