The role supports the Neuroscience Progressive unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, focusing on care across neurosurgical, stroke, general neurosciences, and epilepsy populations. The unit combines a neuroscience step down, a neuroscience floor, and an epilepsy monitoring unit, with staff trained to work across areas as needed.
Shift Information- Full-time, 36 hours per week
- 3 (12-hour) shifts from 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM

General Care InformationThe Neuroscience Progressive unit is a 29-bed unit comprised of a neuroscience step down (12 beds), neuroscience floor (11 beds), and epilepsy monitoring unit (6 beds). Nurses are trained to work in all areas of this unit, caring for the neurological population across care phases.
Specialty Care & DevicesThe Neuro Step Down Unit is a 12-bed progressive care portion serving the complex neurological patient population. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a Comprehensive Stroke Center, providing high-level stroke care. This area cares for acute phase stroke patients (including post-TPA or thrombectomy) with ongoing neurological status assessment and telemetry/pulse oximetry monitoring. The unit also accepts patients with cerebrospinal fluid drains such as external ventricular drains (EVDs) and lumbar drains.
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a segment for elective admission and seizure event evaluation. Patients are monitored with video EEG (vEEG) in a controlled environment. Nurses respond promptly, assess, and keep patients safe during events.
The neuroscience floor accepts medical and surgical patients with neurological diagnoses. Populations include brain tumor resections and management, neuromuscular disorders, demyelinating disorders, stroke, and seizures.
Collaboration across the interdisciplinary team is essential. The team seeks another teammate to bring strong clinical abilities and a commitment to patient-centered care.
Clinical Nurse RoleThe Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards. The RN is accountable for provision and coordination of evidence-based care for an assigned group of patients, including diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation, in alignment with ANA standards and ethical guidelines.
ResponsibilitiesThe professional clinical nurse performs essential functions within the nursing practice framework. The following responsibilities describe key areas of contribution:
Advocate- Practices in accordance with the patient-centered care model
- Develops an individualized, age-specific, culturally sensitive nursing plan of care based on the nursing process
- Incorporates patient advocacy into the plan of care
- Uses a team approach to achieve daily patient-centered goals
- Values the patient’s significant others as part of the plan of care
- Identifies potential conflicts and facilitates resolution through established communication channels
- Promotes the patient’s health, safety, and rights while maintaining a safe environment
- Advances clinical expertise through ongoing education and specialty certification when eligible
- Continuously enhances skills to ensure high-quality patient care
- Educates team members, patients, and students
- Demonstrates critical thinking when evidence and practice differ
- Identifies priorities, sets goals, and prescribes safe nursing interventions
- Develops and implements individualized education plans for patients and families
- Evaluates patient responses and updates the plan of care accordingly
- Escalates appropriately and consults needed experts
- Participates in team goal development and evaluation
- Delegates and supervises interventions as needed
- Documents handoffs clearly and completely
