Job DescriptionJoin the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Neurology Intensive Care Unit. As the inpatient Neurology ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) you will manage general neurology and consultative neurology patients, leveraging knowledge of critical neurological conditions to care for the adult patient population.
The ideal candidate will have critical care, general medicine and/or neurology clinical experience that can be leveraged to care for a diverse patient population and the full range of neurological disorders. As a member of the Neurology‑Critical Care team, the neurology APP will manage critical care patients in the dedicated Neuro‑ICU as well as respond to consultation requests from emergency services, inpatient units, and all other critical care areas throughout the hospital.
Attending physicians hold frequent rounds and are always available to discuss cases and treat patients. Radiology, pathology, and case conferences complement direct patient care.
- Brain and spinal cord injuries
- Brain infections (encephalitis and meningitis)
- Brain swelling
- Brain tumors
- Nerve and muscle problems that affect breathing, such as myasthenia gravis and Guillain‑Barré syndrome
- Status epilepticus
- Stroke
- Any catastrophic disorder affecting neurologic function
Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice nurse responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management. The Nurse Practitioner manages a caseload of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. Scope of practice includes family support, teaching, staff education, consultation, and research.
Nurse Practitioner - Education And Experience Requirements- Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois
- Current APN license
- Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree required
- ICU or Neurology experience highly preferred
Job Summary
The Physician Assistant is qualified by academic and clinical education to provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, clinical nursing specialist support and administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The PA has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice. This licensed health professional will take patient histories, conduct examinations, diagnose illnesses, perform pre‑ and post‑operative patient evaluation, order and interpret laboratory tests and assist during complicated operations.
The PA exercises autonomy in medical decision making and provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.
- Completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program
- Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure / registration required
- ICU Certification Preferred
- ICU or Neurology experience highly preferred
