Summer 2026 Nurse Extern Program - 3W Transplant

Full-time, Night Shift

10-week Summer Nurse Externship program, Monday, June 1st - Friday, August 7th, 2026

In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine's mission to provide superior health care, the mission of the Nurse Extern Program is to provide exceptional professional development for students completing their last year in a BSN, or direct entry MSN program. The focus of the nurse externship program will include Medical/Surgical & General Medicine departments.

* Students are matched with one clinical area for the duration of the program

* Opportunity to continue working during your final year of school after the externship

* Flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments

* Program designed to support transition into a Staff Nurse role upon graduation and licensure

Application and Interviewing Process

* All Interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom.

* The interviewing process will start mid-January for selected candidates

Required Qualifications

* BLS (CPR)

* Request 2 professional reference letters prior to the interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor

* Copy of most recent transcript

* GPA of 3.0 or higher required

* Be enrolled full-time in an accredited BSN or direct-entry MSN program

* Must be entering your final year in a BSN or direct-entry MSN program in the fall of 2026

Nurse Externship Details

* Candidates need to be available for Three, 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the 10-week program

* Positions will include Day and Night shift opportunities.

* Candidates will be expected to work some weekends

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
