QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed as a Certified Professional Midwife, Certified Nurse Midwife, a Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse, EMT in the State of Illinois
- Experience in intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal care preferred
- Current BLS and NRP certifications
- Aligned with out of hospital birth and midwifery‑led care
- Self‑directed and committed to providing superior care and education to Birth Center of Chicago families and assisting the midwife providers in the provision of care
The Birth Assistant provides care for the client and family during labor, birth, and postpartum period at Birth Center of Chicago. The Birth Assistant may also participate in the provision of client education programs, community outreach, and center operations in collaboration with the Administrative team and/or Director of Midwifery.
Prenatal care- Assist midwife on clinic days with day to day responsibilities
- Assist midwife with documentation
- Assist midwife with assessments of maternal and fetal health as indicated
- Restocking of birth rooms at the end of the clinic day
- Arrive at birth center within 60 minutes of being contacted by on call midwife
- Participate in direct client care during intrapartum and postpartum, including fetal heart rate monitoring
- Monitor vitals of laboring client
- Assist client with comfort positions, provide labor support
- Administer medications and/or start IV as indicated
- Assist midwife with obstetric emergency management including newborn resuscitation
- Accompany client or newborn to hospital in event of transfer
- Monitor vitals of client and newborn
- Ongoing assessment of uterus and lochia
- Ongoing assessment of newborn
- Assist with establishing breastfeeding
- Prepare light meals for family
- Review discharge instructions
- Cleaning and restocking of the birth room after discharge
- Attends and participates in monthly meeting, training, and drills
