Senior Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)

Location:

Chicago, IL

The Senior OR RN plays a critical role in assisting surgeons during operative procedures, maintaining a sterile and safe operating environment, and delivering compassionate, high-quality perioperative care. This position is ideal for an OR RN with 3–5 years of experience who demonstrates strong clinical expertise.

Key Responsibilities Clinical & Patient Care
  • Provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care using the nursing process, critical thinking, and professional judgment.
  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures by explaining procedures, potential outcomes, and post-operative expectations.
  • Assist surgeons during operations while maintaining strict sterile technique and adherence to OR protocols.
  • Monitor patient condition throughout procedures and respond appropriately to changes.
  • Ensure safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing practice for patients of all ages.
Operating Room Operations
  • Maintain a sterile, organized, and efficient operating room environment.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, supplies, and OR inventory management.
  • Support complex procedures including spine, orthopedic, and robotic surgeries.
  • Assist in managing equipment, supplies, and room readiness to support optimal surgical flow.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiology, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary care teams.
  • Serve as a clinical role model by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and patient-centered care.
  • Support and supervise other healthcare team members as appropriate.
  • Participate in special projects, committees, and quality improvement initiatives.
Professional Development & Quality
  • Engage in continuous learning and complete at least 8 hours of role-specific continuing education annually, in addition to mandatory education.
  • Integrate evidence-based practice and research findings into daily clinical care.
  • Contribute to quality assurance, patient safety, and performance improvement efforts.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and willingness to learn new techniques, technologies, and workflows within the OR.
Qualifications Required
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications (required).
  • 3–5 years of Operating Room RN experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-focused approach to care.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours and participate in on-call rotation.
