The University of Illinois Chicago’s partnership between the College of Nursing and the College of Medicine offers a new Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship. This exciting program will accept one fellow in its first year. We are looking for nurse practitioner students who are either graduating in May 2026 or Nurse Practitioners with 5 years or less of clinical experience. Potential applicants must have a DNP degree by the start of the program.
Candidates are reviewed and selected through an application and interview process. Candidates currently enrolled in an adult‑gerontology acute care, adult‑gerontology primary care, or family nurse practitioner program will be considered. Nurse Practitioners who are actively practicing and within five years of graduating from an accredited DNP program are eligible. Applicants must provide verification of their eligibility for an Illinois RN license.
Only candidates who meet the established selection criteria will be considered for interview.
- Develop expertise in cardiovascular pathophysiology with an understanding of pharmaceutical, procedural, and surgical treatment options.
- Use evidence‑based medicine practices to ensure quality, cost‑effective care.
- Educate patients and families regarding cardiovascular disease while gaining sensitivity to the patient’s emotional, physical, spiritual, and cultural needs.
- Develop organizational skills to manage a patient caseload.
- Develop effective communication and presentation skills as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- DNP degree by the start of the program.
- Graduating in May 2026 or Nurse Practitioner with ≤5 years of clinical experience.
- Active Illinois RN license or eligibility to obtain one.
- Enrollment in an adult‑gerontology acute care, adult‑gerontology primary care, or family nurse practitioner program (for students).
- Proficiency in cardiovascular diagnosis and management.
