The Senior Director, Field Medical Affairs (FMA) in COVID‑19/Virology will provide leadership, oversight, and overall direction to a group of US Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). The role supports the design and execution of strategic therapeutic area plans under the guidance of the VP of US Medical Affairs and collaborates closely with cross‑functional partners.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and inspire a high‑performing MSL team, fostering development, managing performance, and guiding strategic execution.
  • Supervise a Director of Field Medical Affairs and a larger group of MSLs.
  • Partner with recruiters, training, and operations to devise recruitment strategies and build high‑performing teams.
  • Develop and implement strategic field‑based plans for Shionogi’s marketed and pipeline COVID‑19/Virology products, oversee execution, manage budget, and report on MSL activities.
  • Maintain an organizational infrastructure with appropriate geographical distribution and robust training.
  • Collaborate with the Field Medical Affairs Trainer to assess training needs and drive team development initiatives.
  • Identify and interact with KOLs in designated disease areas and geography on national, regional, and local levels.
  • Oversee scientific exchange with HCPs, KOLs, and investigators, communicating medical and scientific information on Shionogi products.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs colleagues to execute therapeutic area strategy and tactics.
  • Gather customer insights and provide feedback to internal stakeholders for process and material improvements.
  • Ensure compliant and appropriate practices in all HCP interactions.
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders (Clinical, Marketing, Market Access, Sales) and lead cross‑functional teams as needed.
  • Drive expansion of research, advisory, and educational opportunities with external stakeholders.
  • Represent and discuss medical and scientific information in advisory boards, payer presentations, formulary decisions, and other HCP settings.
  • Serve on Medical Affairs and Commercial advisory boards and cross‑functional teams.
  • Direct field‑based Medical Affairs attendance and coverage at congresses and meetings, including post‑conference reporting.
  • Monitor the competitive environment to maintain expertise in treatment management and new therapies.
  • Maintain policies and processes to guide daily operations of the Medical Affairs field team.
  • Ensure compliance with all communication and field activities, relevant to corporate policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a life sciences program with strong knowledge of science and healthcare.
  • Minimum 12 years in the pharmaceutical industry, including 5+ years in Field Medical Affairs as an MSL; 3+ years in Anti‑infectives, Virology, and/or Vaccines; 2+ years as a Team Lead.
  • Proven experience building, leading, and motivating national MSL teams.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans for the MSL team and communicating progress to cross‑functional and management teams.
  • Ability to lead and inspire MSL teams, set clear goals, and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Understanding of industry regulations and compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in Medical Affairs operations with an emphasis on field‑based teams.
  • Experience mentoring, providing career development guidance, and nurturing professional growth.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and latest medical advancements to guide MSL team interactions.
  • Proficiency in interpreting clinical data, scientific literature, and market insights to inform strategic decisions.
  • Understanding of pharmaceutical business principles and ability to contribute to strategic medical and cross‑functional discussions.
  • Extensive experience in U.S. pre‑launch and launch activities strongly preferred.
