Position Summary
Join to apply for the BSD-FS Dock Manager role at the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago. The BSD-FS Dock Manager supports the achievement of BSD’s scientific and educational goals through effective delivery of logistical and event operation services across the BSD campus buildings (Cummings, Kovler, KCBD, BSLC, GCIS, and Hull Court). Acting as the main point of contact, the Dock Manager coordinates shipping and receiving services, event set‑up and tear‑down, and day‑to‑day dock operations to support faculty, researchers, students, and visitors.
BasePay Range
$70,000.00 /yr – $90,000.00 /yr
Responsibilities- Supervise the effective delivery of logistical services for all BSD campus buildings.
- Administer, implement, and enforce effective policies and procedures with the BSD‑FS Union Clerk staff, including staff scheduling based on business needs in collaboration with the BSD‑FS Director of Plant and Facility Operations.
- Manage KCBD loading dock space to create a safe and organized workplace environment.
- Manage package receipt and delivery activities for BSD campus buildings, including lost/misplaced packages and tanks; directly supervise BSD‑FS Union Clerk staff.
- Maintain and provide equipment necessary for dock activities (e.g., forklift, delivery vehicles); monitor staff usage and schedule maintenance as needed.
- Coordinate equipment disposal service in collaboration with departmental/divisional groups.
- Collaborate with BSD Building Management group on scheduling BSD‑FS staff for events scheduled in BSD space.
- Monitor and report package/tank delivery services via internal logistics system (QTrak).
- Track and manage BSD‑FS Union Clerk staff administrative needs, including safety training compliance, attendance, and interdisciplinary action.
- Perform financial purchasing activities on behalf of the BSD‑FS team (including BSD‑FS Building Management) for needed office items, dock equipment, invoices for contractual services.
- Perform dock tasks on an as‑needed basis.
- Maintain shipping and receiving activities and records; resolve related shipping, receiving, and distribution problems; coordinate with vendors and Budget to ensure quality and pricing of supplies and equipment meet expectations.
- Hire, evaluate, and conduct performance evaluations; plan and assign work; exercise quality and quantity controls.
- Responsible for daily operation and regular maintenance of shipping & receiving equipment; authorize purchase of operating necessities; determine need and order repair service.
- Collaborate with manager regarding building management and maintenance; place and monitor work requests; supervise projects, and serve as liaison to central facilities staff and outside contractors.
- Perform other related work as needed.
- College or university degree in related field.
- 5–7 years of related work experience in a related job discipline.
- Management of union employees.
- Work with faculty, executive administrators, and/or plant department.
- OSHA 10 or 30‑hour card.
- Facilities/dock related certificate or designation programs (e.g., CDL, forklift certification).
- Able to categorize and prioritize work activities.
- Able to develop and implement solutions to varied problems.
- Complete numerous activities in a multi‑task environment.
- Effectively communicate in both written and verbal format.
- Able to use a personal computer and standard software packages.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
- Able to effectively manage union staff.
- Able to climb stairs/ladders and orient body to complete dock inspections.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds and move small items (boxes, cylinders, etc.).
