Roosevelt University is looking for a full‑time engineer. The engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining all machinery and equipment as assigned to the engineer’s duties.

This position is located on the Chicago campus and reports to the Chief and/or Assistant Chief Engineer. The schedule is a 3pm–11pm afternoon shift, with off days on Sunday and Monday. The salary is $49.70 per hour. This is a union position and will require union membership; health and wellness benefits are provided by the union.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as an operating engineer.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and detailed equipment maintenance and safety records.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of electrical control systems and proper use of a digital multimeter.
  • Ability to perform basic refrigeration troubleshooting skills.
  • Previous experience with PC‑based building automation systems (e.g. Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Apogee, Phillips Teletrol). Must demonstrate a knowledge of the basic sequence of operations of systems.
  • Current member in good standing with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.

  • Previous experience working with an automated work order system.
Equipment Operated

Basic office equipment (desktop computer, copier/multi‑function device, fax, telephone). Occasional use of the telephone iPhone is required.

Working Conditions

This position requires the physical ability to perform heavy lifting, opening and closing large valves under air or water pressure, and the ability to work from ladders and scaffold under approved OSHA guidelines. Work is required in all areas of the university, including but not limited to basements, labs, classrooms, dining areas, and areas under construction. Both indoor and outdoor work may be required.

Regular use of a desktop computer is required, calling for frequent hand/wrist movement and repetition. The role involves a moderate level of stress and occasional travel within the local or regional setting may be required.

Maintains and monitors condition and ensures functioning of boilers, electricity and electrical distribution systems, plumbing and piping systems, internal combustion engines, pumps, air compressors, generators, ice machines, air‑conditioning units, chillers (centrifugal and screw type), cooling towers, air handling units, variable frequency drives, building automation systems (pneumatic and direct digital control), laboratory hoods, chemical testing of water systems, kitchen cooking equipment, garbage disposals, fire alarm monitoring systems, data centers, and fire suppression systems.
