Conflicts Counsel – Chicago
Benesch, a nationally recognized firm on the AmLaw 150 list, invites an experienced attorney to serve as Conflicts Counsel in its Chicago office. The role is hybrid and supports a seamless, high‑volume conflicts clearance process for corporate and transactional work.
Position SummaryAs Conflicts Counsel you will: conduct detailed conflict checks; manage firm‑wide clearance for new clients, lateral attorneys, and mergers; coordinate workflow; and continuously improve our processes through automation and best‑practice recommendations.
Essential Functions- Conduct conflict checks on all available information, including affiliates and related parties.
- Manage the firm‑wide conflicts clearance process for new clients/matters and lateral attorneys.
- Consult regularly with General Counsel, Risk Management, and other stakeholders on conflict results, issues, and improvements.
- Create and review waiver and engagement letter exemplars, drafting as required.
- Maintain the Outside Counsel Guideline process and review for potential issues.
- Lead research on ethical issues and provide best‑practice recommendations to senior counsel.
- Assist in creating, implementing, and updating policies related to matter maintenance, closings, and lateral movements.
- Train secretarial and administrative staff on the conflicts/new business intake workflow application.
- Stay current on trends in conflicts of interest management.
- Participate in other projects and tasks as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
All documents and information related to conflicts of interest are confidential and must be maintained at all times.
Qualifications• J.D. with 2+ years of conflicts analysis experience in a large law firm.
• Experience with corporate/transactional matters is a plus.
• Proficiency with conflict‑check software (Intapp Open preferred).
• Comprehensive knowledge of ethical, legal, and risk‑management rules related to conflicts of interest.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to explain conflicts reports to timekeepers.
• Strong interpersonal skills with tact and diplomacy.
$107,000 – $140,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
