We are seeking a Primary Casualty Underwriter to support the profitable growth of our U.S. excess and surplus (E&S) commercial casualty portfolio. This role will focus on underwriting complex primary casualty risks across general liability, products liability, and liquor liability lines of business. The position may be remote or in our Chicago office.
Key Responsibilities- Underwrite a portfolio of E&S primary casualty business, including General Liability, Products Liability, and Liquor Liability.
- Evaluate, price, and structure casualty risks across diverse industries, including manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, commercial real estate, entertainment, and residential real estate.
- Analyze loss experience, exposure data, contracts, and risk characteristics to ensure pricing adequacy and disciplined underwriting decisions.
- Negotiate terms, conditions, limits, and pricing with brokers to achieve profitable growth while maintaining strong market relationships.
- Collaborate closely with claims, actuarial, and legal teams to deliver integrated casualty solutions.
- Participate in monitoring portfolio performance, loss trends, and exposure aggregation; identify opportunities for corrective action or strategic growth.
- Stay current on casualty market conditions, legal and regulatory developments, social inflation trends, and competitive dynamics.
- Support internal governance processes, including referrals, audits, peer reviews, and underwriting committees.
- Represent HDI as a knowledgeable, market-facing casualty underwriter in broker meetings and industry events.
- 5+ years of experience in commercial E&S primary casualty underwriting (carrier or MGA).
- Exposure to large accounts or complex risks is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven underwriting environment.
- Willingness to travel for broker and client meetings as needed – Likely 10% to 20%.
- Strong technical expertise in primary casualty underwriting, including GL, liquor liability, and products liability.
- Solid understanding of loss cost drivers, contractual risk transfer, indemnification provisions, and emerging casualty trends.
- Experience underwriting complex and high-severity exposures, including long-tail risks and litigation-sensitive industries.
- Ability to independently evaluate risk, exercise sound underwriting judgment, and make balanced risk-reward decisions.
- Strong analytical skills, with comfort reviewing loss runs, exposure data, and actuarial indications.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-management skills.
- Aptitude for underwriting systems and pricing tools.
- Base salary range for this position is $120,000-$140,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on a variety of factors including experience, education, and location.
