Join CNA Insurance as an Underwriter focusing on Private/Non‑Profit Management Liability.
Under broad supervision, this role is responsible for underwriting risks in a renewal book of business for Private/Non‑Profit Management Liability. The position works within limited authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity, utilizing underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
JOB DESCRIPTIONEssential Duties & Responsibilities
- Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring moderate technical underwriting skills, determining acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
- Recommends appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements for risks after complete analysis and consideration of applicant documentation, business factors, and competitive situations.
- Prepares quotes and answers questions from agencies, internal and external contacts, and escalates issues as necessary.
- Prepares written communication on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations, and verbally notifies agents of decisions where appropriate to ensure clear understanding.
- Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepares reports for management review.
- Opens the possibility of assisting in marketing products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community and makes field visits.
- Develops and maintains positive agency and/or broker relationships to ensure positive outcomes.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.
- Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
- Develops proficiency in all relevant CNA systems and may update the underwriting systems.
- Knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
- Developing technical expertise and negotiation skills and product‑specific knowledge of Private/Non‑Profit Management Liability.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to interact effectively with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with rapid learning, adaptability, and capacity to prioritize multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions effectively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other business‑related software.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Completion of a formal underwriting training program or a minimum of one year of underwriting experience.
In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $47,000 to $78,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.
