Sr IT Security Engineer – Data Governance, Protection & DLP Focus

Chicago, IL — Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 WFH)

Summary

The Sr IT Security Engineer will own data governance, compliance, and information protection initiatives, primarily through Microsoft Purview
. This role focuses on data classification, labeling, DLP, insider risk management, records lifecycle governance, and eDiscovery. The engineer will partner cross-functionally with Security, Legal, Risk, Records Management, and Data teams to ensure firm-wide data protection and regulatory alignment.

Core Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, and maintain Microsoft Purview solutions for classification, labeling, retention, and compliance
  • Implement data protection controls, including DLP, Insider Risk Management, Information Protection, and eDiscovery
  • Develop and enforce governance policies for secure data handling across M365 and Azure
  • Build automated governance workflows for lifecycle management and secure data sharing
  • Integrate Purview alerts into Security Operations and incident response processes
  • Monitor compliance alerts and investigate data leakage or policy violations
  • Support audits, risk assessments, and compliance initiatives (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, ISO 27001)
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, IT, and Data Governance teams to balance business needs with regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field
  • 5+ years in security engineering, compliance engineering, or data governance
  • Experience with Information Protection, DLP, Insider Risk, Records Management, and eDiscovery
  • Deep understanding of data governance and compliance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, ISO 27001)
  • Ability to troubleshoot and remediate data protection and governance issues in M365 environments
Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft certifications (Information Protection Admin, Security Ops Analyst, AZ-500)
  • CISSP, CISM, CCSP, Security+
  • Experience in legal, financial, or other highly regulated environments
  • Exposure to tools like Varonis, Digital Guardian, or Cyberhaven
  • Experience supporting large-scale legal hold and eDiscovery workflows
