The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures was founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted with the financial support of John

D. Rockefeller Jr. It is a research laboratory investigating the early human career from West Asia and North Africa. The Institute is the world’s leading center for the study of the ancient civilizations of West Asia and North Africa, combining theory, methodology, and empirical discovery with rigorous scholarship.

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum opened in 1931. Major renovations occurred in the 1990s, early 2000s, and most recently in 2019 to celebrate the Institute’s centennial. The Institute is a unit of the University of Chicago.

Job Summary

This position provides critical IT support for ISAC, assisting faculty, staff, and researchers with technology onboarding, equipment management, user support, and security compliance. The role delivers first‑tier support for hardware, networking, software, and site licensing issues, configures and installs basic applications, and maintains servers and peripherals. It coordinates IT services with ISAC leadership and enhances research initiatives through technology solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain ISAC server infrastructure, both on‑premise and cloud‑based, in partnership with IT Services.
  • Serve as a technical resource for new and existing ISAC research projects.
  • Manage and support ISAC’s point‑of‑sale terminals for the Museum Shop and other revenue programs.
  • Participate in and coordinate internal and university‑wide IT initiatives.
  • Represent ISAC at monthly IT Leadership Council meetings.
  • Solve complex end‑user issues involving hardware, site licensing, software, and networking.
  • Administer operating systems, maintain security, and implement backup procedures for servers, desktops, printers, and storage devices.
  • Maintain audio/visual infrastructure for research, teaching, and programming.
  • Lead internal meetings requiring IT input, including website redesign, hiring, and new initiative committees.
  • Track inventory of ISAC‑owned computers, laptops, and tablets.
  • Build professional relationships with faculty and staff, conducting weekly stakeholder meetings.
  • Communicate with users to understand computing needs and implement accommodations.
  • Advise on all IT issues, including procurement and vendor interactions.
  • Stay current on technology trends and pursue continuing education.
  • Guide end‑user hardware/software resolution and recommend system modifications.
  • Use knowledge of University IT best practices to analyze and resolve complex problems.
  • Provide technical guidance for desktop hardware and software setup, installation, and configuration.
  • Perform related work as needed.
Education

Minimum requirement: college or university degree related to the field.

Experience

Minimum requirement: 5–7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
