Company: A small real estate and property management firm managing 6 properties and approximately 40 employees in the Chicago area.
Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 (commensurate with experience; flexible for highly qualified candidates)
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to lead and execute all HR functions as a department of one. In this hands-on role, you will manage the entire employee lifecycle – from talent acquisition and onboarding to benefits administration and offboarding – while ensuring HR strategies support our business goals and comply with all employment laws.
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated HR generalist with deep knowledge of HR compliance, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently in a small business environment. This position is full-time, on-site in Chicago, and will report directly to the company’s leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Full-Cycle Recruitment & Onboarding: Manage staffing for all roles including job postings, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding (background checks, orientation, and paperwork).
- Employee Relations & Engagement: Serve as the point of contact for employee concerns, mediate workplace issues, and support a positive, respectful work environment. Guide managers on performance and disciplinary matters.
- HR Administration & Records: Maintain accurate employee records, update organizational policies, and ensure timely completion of all HR administrative duties.
- Benefits & Payroll Coordination: Administer benefits (health, dental, vision, 401(k)), support payroll updates, and collaborate with Finance to ensure accurate payroll processing using ADP Workforce Now. Familiarity with Yardi is a plus.
- Compliance & Policy Management: Ensure all HR practices comply with federal, state, and local employment laws. Maintain and enforce HR policies and conduct periodic audits.
- Performance Management & Development: Support managers with performance evaluations, improvement plans, and employee development initiatives.
- Culture & Engagement: Foster an inclusive and positive culture through employee recognition, engagement activities, and by championing a people-first approach.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Experience: 10+ years of broad HR experience, preferably in real estate, property management, or small business settings.
- Compliance Expertise: Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance (federal and Illinois-specific).
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) is a plus.
- Systems: Proficiency with ADP Workforce Now is required.
Experience with Yardi is a plus. Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). - Soft Skills: Excellent communication, discretion, judgment, and problem-solving skills. Must be organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently.
