Purpose of the RoleThe Medical Staff Services Specialist II implements and executes procedures to assess criteria for membership and granting of privileges to practice in the facility for prospective and current Medical Staff members and Advanced Practice Professionals in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory standards. This role executes defined Medical Staff Services operations under the direction of the Director, Medical Staff Services.
Duties & Responsibilities- Uniformly apply clearly defined credentialing or privileging processes to all practitioners/providers.
- Securely manage credentialing software as the single source of truth, navigate the software effectively, and maintain data integrity.
- Verify status of licenses, certifications, and other expirables; query approved sources and recommend actions to ensure compliance.
- Keep Medical Staff Director and/or Coordinator informed of work progress; negotiate deadlines and priorities.
- Communicate with staff regarding information flow to maintain daily department activities and collaboration with clinical departments.
- Serve as a resource on Medical Staff issues, including credentialing processes, Bylaws, and Committees.
- Contribute to analysis, design, and implementation of credentialing/privileging processes and operations.
- Participate in surveys and audits by regulatory and accreditation agencies or delegated entities.
- Attend onboarding and network representative meetings; establish relationships with providers, office managers, professional billing, and payer contacts.
- Perform related duties as assigned and serve as the main contact for practitioners during the application process, providing timely updates.
- Evaluate applications, primary source verifications, and supporting documents to determine initial eligibility; review for completeness.
- Process and evaluate privileging requests and evidence of education, training, experience, and competency to determine eligibility for requested privileges.
- Identify discrepancies and independently investigate and validate information from applications and verifications.
- Compile and present practitioner-specific data for review by decision-making bodies.
- Demonstrate understanding of state and regulatory standards and monitor sanctions and complaints for all practitioners/providers.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories: college coursework in health care administration, health information technology, health sciences, public health, social sciences, business administration, or related fields; or an associate’s/bachelor’s degree as applicable to the conversion table below.
- Work experience in a medical setting such as office administration, billing, customer service, health information technology, medical insurance, patient admission/registration, or related areas.
- Six (6) months of work experience comparable to Medical Staff Services Specialist I.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; CPCS or CPMSM Certification preferred by the National Association of Medical Staff Services.
- Ability to communicate effectively with Hospital, College, and Medical Staff levels; ability to work independently and set priorities.
