Summary:
Performs echo cardiographic examinations to assist in the diagnosis of heart disease according to established standards. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regard to their growth and development process. The position actively supports the Hospital’s and Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals, individually and as an effective team member.

Essential Job Functions:
- Performs echo cardiographic studies within the spectrum of diagnoses seen in routine adult echocardiography, such as assessment of ventricular function, valve function, and pericardial effusion, without supervision.
- Performs more straightforward studies of patients with simple congenital heart disease, such as assessment of shunt lesions in the presence of otherwise normal intra-cardiac relations, valvar obstructions, and assessment of the coronary arteries, with supervision.
- Under supervision of the senior sonographers and physician supervisors, becomes progressively exposed to more complex forms of congenital heart disease.
- Provides written communication under supervision, for use by divisional cardiologists only with the understanding that this does not constitute an official report.
- Submits all studies to the physician supervisor for review prior to the patient’s discharge from the laboratory.
- After a suitable training period, and after demonstrating proficiency in performing independent studies, may be assigned to outreach clinic responsibilities and on-call duties
- After suitable training, participates in the technical support of transesophageal studies.
- After training or from prior experience in adult laboratories, may participate in the performance of stress echocardiography.
- Responsible for daily lab maintenance tasks, such as, disinfecting all equipment and machines in exam rooms per Joint Commission standards, and stocking of supplies and linen.
- Participates in lab teaching, operational and quality assurance meetings, and research projects as assigned.
- Participates in organizing national conferences and IAC meetings.
- Participates in the logging and billing of procedures
- Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
- Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Registered as ARDMS/CCI sonographer in Adult Echocardiography or Pediatric Echocardiography; or a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited program and registry eligible.
- Prior clinical experience in echocardiography, adult or pediatric, is required.
- Basic Life Support Certification required. PALS strongly preferred.
- Must be registered by ARDMS in Pediatric Echocardiography within 12 months of hire.
- Ability to effectively communicate with hospital/department staff and parents/patients.
- Acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies. Provides a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management
- Ability to use independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
