Pay Range: $27.47 - $38.81 per hour

Responsibilities- Hires, trains, supervises, completes evaluations, and carries out disciplinary actions for RADC staff involved in biospecimen procurement, processing, storage, and analyses.
- Trains and oversees lab personnel, undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the proper handling of lab equipment and measurement tools
- Trains staff in the required new techniques and methods and makes sure lab personnel and students follow established protocols.
- Oversees, coordinates, and performs day to day activities related to routine and complex procedures involving human brain, spinal cord, nerve, and muscle tissue including gross dissection, histology, biomolecular assays, microscopy, and other tests required by the Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
- Oversees and maintains accurate data accounting of all biospecimen processing and analysis such as computer tracking of laboratory progress. Assists in development and implementation of new workflow tracking systems and progress reports.
- Collaborates with internal and external investigators, technicians, and other staff to ensure the proper processing of ante- and postmortem biospecimens. May assist with blood processing and transportation from clinical sites.
- Discusses with Manager to set priorities based on grant funding, progress report due dates, and available staffing and facilitates workflow to meet deadlines.
- Data Security:
Stores data according to guidelines established by Rush Security Officer and makes sure that health information is protected as stipulated under HIPAA and/or IRB rules are followed at all times. - Safety:
Makes sure proper safety procedures are followed at all times. Responsible for safety training of personnel and students regarding laboratory equipment. - Quality:
Works with the Manager to develop and implement quality assurance and quality control measures to ensure optimal biospecimen procurement, processing, storage, analysis and tracking. Performs regular quality control tests on equipment and materials used for research purposes. Schedules, oversees, and keeps records of maintenance and calibration procedures. - Oversees routine maintenance and proper working condition of laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Performs evaluations and makes recommendations regarding acquisition of laboratory instruments and capital equipment.
- Oversees and maintains accurate inventory and storage of ante- and postmortem tissue as well as any subsequent products of the tissue such as DNA, paraffin blocks, stained and unstained sections, etc.
- Standardized testing:
Creates, approves, and regularly reviews and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Makes sure lab personnel and students follow established procedures. - Supplies:
Orders or instructs personnel on the order and stocks supply - Research:
Discusses research objectives with laboratory managers and assists in the formulation and implementation of new ideas, testing procedures, and study protocols. - Continuing
Education:
Continues to improve technical and managerial skills by attending lectures and workshops, and visiting other laboratories. Participates in professional development activities offered by Rush. - Other duties as assigned.
- Required: Bachelor of Science degree and five years’ laboratory experience with increasing responsibilities or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience where the required knowledge, skills, and abilities have been acquired.
- Technical proficiency in basic lab techniques; proficiency in histopathology techniques, including paraffin embedding, sectioning, and immunohistochemistry required.
- Excellent written, computer, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects with frequently changing priorities essential
- Ability to learn and instruct others in new procedures
- Ability to work with human tissue and perform brain autopsies if required.
- Ability to work under strict time constraints and deadlines.
