Position: Mammography Tech - Full-time - Imani Village

Overview

Major Responsibilities and requirements for mammography technologist in the department. The description includes operating mammographic equipment, optimizing image quality with the lowest possible dose, patient care, radiation safety, clerical duties, and related responsibilities.

Major Responsibilities
  • Understand the operation, technique factors, and function of the mammographic systems in department.
  • Operates all mammographic equipment and can select and modify technical factors as needed.
  • Set equipment for every exam in fashion to optimize image quality with lowest possible dose.
  • Checks all equipment on a daily basis, inspects for physical hazards in mammographic rooms and darkroom areas, and reports to the coordinator any malfunctions or hazards.
  • Must be able to do job-related problem solving such as malfunction of equipment, alternate patient positioning and views, realizing equipment or patient limitations.
Operational Proficiency
  • Operate all equipment in a consistent and professional manner, with appropriate respect for patient dose and image quality (demonstrated by adequate collimation/shielding and low repeat rate).
  • Be familiar with and understand the common projections in a routine mammographic examination.
  • Be skilled in the selection and adjustment of technical controls and factors governing the filming of patients, or the operation of equipment.
  • Have an experienced background in the use and operation of mammographic equipment.
Patient Care and Radiation Safety
  • Adhere to the principles of radiation protection as set forth by the State and physicist.
  • Control the positioning and transferring of patients undergoing mammographic examinations, supervise welfare and care, and the use of radiation protection/device immobilization devices.
  • Prepare/position patient for exam; collimate/shield as advisable.
  • Provide for patient comfort and maintain patient modesty and confidentiality; communicate effectively with patients.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in the Mammography suites; ensure imaging and supplies are available; replace deficient supplies as needed.
  • Obtain consent indicating that the patient is not pregnant as needed; document previous films and discuss benefits/necessity of obtaining them.
  • Perform and obtain radiologist-approved preliminary films when needed for specialized exams.
  • Reassurance and supportive care for patient pre-, intra-, and post-procedure; process films accordingly.
  • Can perform skin calcification views when directed by radiologist.
  • Can perform post-mastectomy views when directed by radiologist.
Documentation, Billing and Clerical Duties
  • Bill all patient exams by means of the DMI system and enter data in department software to help track room utilization and staffing needs.
  • Perform Mammography Department clerical duties including updating patient history, pulling previous mammograms, labeling and filing, and notifying scheduling of changes.
  • Update front of main file and mammography jacket with correct label; order supplies from storeroom.
Education, Experience and Knowledge

Education/Experience

Required:

Completion of ARRT-approved Radiologic Technology Program; ARRT Registered or registry eligible.

  • Must be able to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups; prior experience with various age groups preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required:

Understanding of positioning and technique factors; must be licensed by State to perform mammographic procedures; complete formal training; ARRT certification within 1 year of employment; CPR certification.

  • Must have 5 years of radiologic procedures experience with minimum of 1 year performing screening mammograms; training in positioning, compression, technical factors, mammography equipment and technique, film evaluation, and special mammography procedures.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Able to respond to requests to work on short notice; flexible start times; willing to work overtime.
  • Musculoskeletal hazards from repetitive motions; exposure to ionizing radiation.
  • Minimum lifting requirements; use patient lifting equipment for heavier lifts with assistance as needed; additional case-by-case assessments may apply.
