CertifiedMedical Assistants are responsible for:
- Checks and monitors client vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, blood sugar levels) and documents readings.
- Prepares and administers medication as ordered under supervision of a doctor; observes reactions and reports concerns to physician or nursing staff.
- Prepares and administers medication and vaccinations as prescribed, documenting in the medication administration record.
- Reviews and creates physician orders from document sources; places orders such as vital signs requests, lab orders, or dietary instructions.
- Collects client sick call requests, discusses with or notifies MD/RN, and performs data entry.
- Assists physicians, psychiatrists, dietitians, and other providers with exams, prepares exam rooms, and maintains daily schedules.
- Observes client physical, mental, and emotional conditions, reporting changes to nursing staff.
- Performs searches of clients and their property following periods of absence per agency policy.
- Enters lab orders into the electronic medical record and reports incoming results to physician or nursing staff.
- Collects specimens, performs blood draws, and minor procedures under direct MD supervision.
- Performs additional duties such as monitoring supplies, changing biohazard bags, answering telephones, photocopying, scanning, and filing documents and forms.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant training program from an accredited institution.
- Current CPR certification.
- Computer skills, ability to follow protocols, and attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of basic nursing concepts and theories.
- Ability to read, write, understand, and follow written instructions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to collaborate with others.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Critical thinking to assess situations and execute action plans.
- Good organizational skills to work well under pressure.
- Normal or corrected vision, including color vision for reading instruments.
- Communication abilities to gather and exchange information with clients and staff.
- Ability to respond to telephone, pages, and intercoms.
- Manual dexterity for manipulating instruments and syringes, applying bandages, and performing treatments comfortably.
- Ability to drive vehicles when required.
- Keyboard and video display terminal proficiency.
- Capacity to stoop, bend, reach, grab, and walk for up to two hours at a time.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
