The Chemical Stockroom Assistant is a student employee who supports the safe, organized, and compliant operation of the Chemistry Department’s chemical stockroom and instructional laboratories. Under direct supervision, the position assists with chemical inventory management, laboratory preparation, housekeeping, and documentation in accordance with institutional policies and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations (including OSHA and EPA requirements).
This position does not carry independent regulatory authority and functions strictly under supervision.
- Receive, label, log, and store chemicals following approved compatibility and safety guidelines
- Maintain accurate chemical inventory records using departmental systems
- Assist with routine chemical inventory audits
- Restock laboratory reagents and consumables as directed
- Ensure proper labeling of primary and secondary chemical containers
- Prepare routine laboratory solutions and reagents according to established procedures and under supervision
- Set up and dismantle instructional laboratory materials
- Distribute, collect, and store laboratory equipment and glassware
- Adhere to all Chemical Hygiene Plans, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and safety protocols
- Assist with hazardous waste collection, labeling, and staging under supervision
- Immediately report spills, safety concerns, or damaged containers to the Stockroom Manager/CHO
- Maintain orderly, compliant chemical storage and preparation areas
- Clean and organize laboratory benches, preparation rooms, and stockroom areas
- Wash, dry, inspect, and properly store laboratory glassware
- Check eyewash stations, safety showers, spill kits, and safety equipment for readiness and report deficiencies
- Dispose of non-hazardous laboratory waste in accordance with institutional procedures
- Assist with documentation related to stockroom operations and safety compliance
- Support student projects or internships related to chemical management when applicable
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of training and supervision
- Current student enrollment as a science major in good academic standing
- Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in the following courses or equivalent, chem
120/121/253/254 - Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Commitment to safety, compliance, and confidentiality
- Prior laboratory, stockroom, or research experience
- Coursework in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, or related disciplines
- Familiarity with basic chemical safety practices and laboratory equipment
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry materials up to
25 pounds
with or without reasonable accommodation - Ability to work in laboratory and chemical stockroom environments while wearing required PPE
- All training is provided by the department and includes chemical safety, hazard communication, waste handling, and departmental SOPs
- The student employee work sunder supervision at all times
