Coordinator Medical Technologists‑Lab Receiving and Processing

Location:

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Chicago, IL.

Under the direction of the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director, the Coordinator has the authority and accountability for facilitating the delivery of quality service in the laboratory. Performs tasks as Medical Technologist, oversees daily operations and supervises staff assigned to the shift. Serves as a technical expert and resource person and provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinates all pre‑analytical activities in the laboratory during the assigned shift.
  • Contributes to and participates in team and individual efforts to improve the quality of service through root cause analysis and leading process improvement activities.
  • Maintains a quality management system in accordance with the Lurie Children’s and Medical Center quality measurement and improvement plan.
  • Facilitates drop offs from external locations.
  • Coordinates education and training in Lab Receiving & Processing including external laboratory technologists and satellites on Receiving and Processing competencies.
  • Monitors productivity and ensures appropriate turn‑around‑times.
  • Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to provide consultative, educational, technical and informational services as needed, to families, patients and staff.
  • Assists the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director with staff recruitment, job performance monitoring, evaluation and documentation in accordance with accreditation standards.
  • Ensures that inter- and intra‑departmental communications and/or coordination is accomplished where needed.
  • Takes primary responsibility for the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols related to quality. Assists the Laboratory Manager in coordinating the preparation, review, and revision of laboratory manuals.
  • Coordinates/participates in development competency testing and continuing education.
  • Oversees inventory management, including evaluation of new products and recommendations for quality and cost‑effective alternatives.
  • Assists the Lab Administration and Lab Managers in maintaining fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.
  • Performs all tests in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to ensure compliance with federal regulations and accreditation standards (including CAP and the Joint Commission). Documents significant activities and corrective actions as necessary. Assists the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director in complying with governmental, accreditation, and Hospital standards, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA 88), CMS, OSHA, and TJC.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co‑workers and others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree, or Master’s preferred in a biological or medical science.
  • Five years minimum laboratory experience and MT (ASCP) certification required.
  • Ability to problem‑solve, appropriately confront, and resolve issues.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Advanced competency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Education: Bachelor's Degree (Required)

Pay Range: $34.00–$55.59 per hour
