Salary Range

$19.81 – $25.75 per hour. Placement within the range is based on experience, internal equity and collective bargaining agreement for unionized roles.

Description

The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services and demonstrates excellent customer service and communication skills. The role functions as part of a highly effective team that consistently puts "Patients First."

The Phlebotomist is responsible for venipuncture collection and specimen processing, including order entry, verification of test results, patient information retrieval, and lab reception/clerical duties.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy and lab specimen collections per age‑related standards and departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates the AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce medical/health‑care errors.
  • Receives and reviews physician orders, ensuring all necessary information is included for appropriate lab services; enters accurate orders.
  • Communicates with patients using a patient‑communication model and provides appropriate post‑phlebotomy care.
  • Processes specimens in a timely manner to ensure stability and integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging.
  • Reviews/records refrigerator temperature and QC/QA records; reports concerns through the Corrective Action Log to maintenance.
  • Understands operation and maintenance of equipment; follows up on outstanding orders, and communicates results to appropriate parties.
  • Notifies the laboratory and/or physician of specimen procurement problems.
  • Maintains a safe work environment, adheres to biohazard waste procedures, and ensures proper storage and pickup of biohazardous waste.
  • Performs lab‑related clerical duties: order entry, verification, patient information retrieval, email, medical record systems, handheld and desktop devices, supply inventory management, filing, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Uses department resources efficiently; participates in cost‑reduction and workflow optimization.
  • Adheres to continuing education expectations; completes competency assessments.
  • Demonstrates teamwork, professional interaction, and assistance to others.
  • Applies critical thinking and sound judgment to investigate and resolve challenging situations.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school, medical institution, or at least one year of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting; or CMA certification.
Preferred
  • Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types.
  • Experience with processing lab specimens, transferring specimens, and handling a centrifuge.
  • Familiarity with medical EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
