Short Summary

Within the OR managerial structure, the trained Operating Room Tech shall assist in nursing care activities under the direction of a registered nurse and according to the job description and policies of the department. The Operating Room Tech is assigned scrub duties and specific institutional nursing services duties concerning procedural knowledge/skills and the complexity of the patient’s condition and/or the situation.

These duties are performed in a highly confidential manner, following the mission, values, and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and guests.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning and implementation of activities related to direct patient care.
  • Assist in accomplishing an individualized care plan by providing for the physical comfort, safety, and emotional welfare of the surgical patient.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member with all related departments to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Aware of and maintain principles of aseptic technique.
  • Perform primarily in the role of scrub nurse to include:
    Prepare room, supplies, and equipment for the patient; carry out scrub nurse activities required during the operation in such a manner as to ensure asepsis and patient safety; assist the primary RN circulator with delegated circulating duties; assist in room clean‑up between cases; responsible for preparation and after‑care of equipment and supplies; sterilize equipment according to manufacturer recommendations; assist in taking inventories of equipment and supplies;

    recognize and act appropriately in an emergency; participate in staff conferences as a member of the OR nursing team; assist in the orientation process of new personnel in there are of clinical expertise; assist in the revision of departmental procedures; share new knowledge with staff; help maintain a clean and orderly environment in the OR; utilize and support hospital and operating room policies, rules, and regulations;

    adhere to fire and safety regulations of the hospital; maintain strict sharps protocol and follow Standard Precautions; perform all other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
  • High school diploma required.
  • Surgical Scrub Tech certification required.
  • Evidence of on‑the‑job training and experience as a surgical scrub tech preferred.
  • Previous experience as a surgical scrub technician required.
  • 3+ years experience.
  • Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and General Surgery experience preferred.
