Senior Research Technologist – Clinical Research Lab (Full-Time, Days)
Position at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The salary range for this position is $35.27 - $51.14 (Hourly Rate). Placement within the salary range is dependent on relevant work experience, internal equity, and collective bargaining agreements for union positions.

The Senior Research Technologist ensures the success of the laboratory by providing technical and administrative support to department staff and clients. They are capable of performing specialized tests, reviewing records for accuracy and completion, and assigning work to other staff in the Clinical Research Unit as needed to maintain effective laboratory operation.
Responsibilities- Provides technical/administrative oversight to personnel who perform sample processing and laboratory tests.
- Performs all aspects of pre‑analytic workflow to ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens are appropriate and properly processed/transported.
- Collecting, receiving and processing of specimens: verifies labels, evaluates specimen suitability, documents unacceptable specimens, and notifies as required.
- Performs specimen preparation: follows protocols, transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations according to SOPs.
- Enters orders: verifies specimen availability, generates test orders when needed.
- Responsible for all aspects of analytical testing appropriate for the laboratory.
- Maintains test system integrity: examines maintenance logs, follows up; verifies reagents and supplies; performs and records quality control (QC); reviews QC results and takes corrective action.
- Performs tests: prioritizes testing, meets turnaround times, responds to workflow changes, exercises independent judgment.
- Performs technical review and interpretation: develops expertise, reviews results for completeness, interprets results, recognizes unusual findings, follows notification protocols, evaluates instruments, and recommends acquisitions.
- Troubleshoots and solves problems: performs advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and coordinates field service as required.
- Performs all aspects of the post‑analytic workflow to ensure accurate results within established time frames, appropriate specimen storage, billing accuracy, and compliance.
- Specimen storage and transport: stores specimens per protocol, reviews pending logs, follows up on shipments.
- Recognizes compliance issues requiring test order adjustments.
- Universal Responsibilities:
- Ensures quality of operations: assists coordinator and manager, assumes responsibility in their absence, escalates problems, manages inventory and regulatory compliance, initiates Quality Investigation Reports, participates in training new employees, maintains proficiency standards, participates in new test development and validation, presents continuing education programs, develops technical goals and standards, provides lab expertise to clients, performs utilization reviews, creates/revises budgets, notifies clients of logistics.
- Information Systems: ensures LIS integrity, oversees software updates, demonstrates IT expertise.
- Ensures safety: follows safety procedures, uses PPE, maintains clean workspace, escalates issues.
- Provides service excellence: answers telephones using AIDET etiquette, maintains patient confidentiality, assists patients and visitors.
