Overview

Physical Therapist - Clinical Locomotor Specialist - Part Time. The Physical Therapist will assist patients in reaching maximum physical performance while addressing disabilities. The role supports the organization’s mission and core values, emphasizing collaboration, compassion, and excellence in patient care.

• Evaluate patients' physical and functional status, including muscular strength, motor function, reflexes, ambulation, and activities of daily living.
• Observe and interview patients, review medical history, administer sensory tests, muscle tests, range-of-motion exams, and other evaluation techniques.
• Determine suitability for treatment and apply physical therapy modalities (e.g., whirlpool, ultrasound, massage, biofeedback, pare paraffin) and assistive devices as needed.
• Assess pain levels, provide pain education and intervention in consultation with physicians or pain specialists, and monitor ongoing pain management.
• Establish therapy goals and create a treatment plan including exercises, modalities, balance activities, and gait training.
• Discuss evaluation results, goals, and treatment with patient and family; instruct on exercise programs and equipment use; participate in discharge planning and home programs when appropriate.
• Document evaluations and progress; maintain records for physicians and insurance carriers; order devices such as wheelchairs, canes, crutches, and orthotic/prosthetic devices when needed.
• Participate in department education by teaching and supervising students; contribute to research projects as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab.

• Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program; licensed to practice in the State of Illinois.
• Current CPR certification.
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and PT treatments and modalities.
• Ability to interpret growth and development information across infant to geriatric patients; strong interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, patients, and families.
• Analytical ability to prioritize, contribute to policy/development, and assess new programs; ability to lift 20-50 pounds occasionally and 10-25 pounds frequently for patient handling.
• Working conditions include a normal office environment with exposure to infectious diseases; some travel or off-site clinic settings may apply.

Includes Saturday and Sunday rotation work. Pay range and benefits vary by position and location; compensation is based on experience and qualifications. Shirley Ryan Ability Lab offers a comprehensive benefits program.
