About The Department

Student Counseling (SC) is a unit within Student Wellness, part of Campus and Student Life. SC provides mental health care to eligible students and their eligible dependents. Services include diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SC staff consults with University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and provides outreach/education to the campus community.

SC employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.

Job Summary

This one-year, full-time, benefits-eligible position is a postdoctoral training for a graduate from a fully accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology, seeking licensure and interested in combining clinical work with outreach, consultation, and supervision. Approximately 70% of the time will be spent delivering clinical mental health services, with the remaining time in outreach, consultation, receiving and providing supervision, and engaging in professional development and/or other SC activities.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of patients, including urgent‑care/crisis evaluations.
  • Provide goal‑focused, time‑limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
  • Maintain timely and complete electronic clinical documentation.
  • Provide consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.
  • Participate in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical training and supervision for psychology externs as needed.
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret federal and state laws, rules, regulations, Code of Ethics, policies, and procedures related to clinical psychology.
  • Deliver clinical services with guidance and instruction from others.
  • Combine clinical work with outreach, consultation, and supervision while working toward licensure.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • College or university degree in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.

    D.) from an APA‑approved graduate program; documentation within two months of hire.
  • Completion of a pre‑doctoral internship at a college counseling center by August 31, 2026; documentation required within 2 months of hire.
  • Advanced training or experience with college‑age or young adult populations.
  • Interest in helping students overcome behavioral and emotional obstacles to peak academic performance.
  • Training in a university counseling setting.
  • Providing evidence‑based, time‑limited psychotherapy.
  • Providing services to underrepresented populations and first‑generation university students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
