Financial Controller | Hybrid | $150,000 to $180,000 + Bonus & Benefits
A Chicago area private investment firm is seeking a Controller to report directly to the CFO. This individual will play a key role across finance operations, including financial reporting, audit coordination, tax support, and transaction related diligence tied to portfolio activity.
Key responsibilities- Prepare and review quarterly and annual financial statements for investors
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including cash management, expense payments, close activities, and GAAP compliant accruals and journal entries
- Coordinate external audits and ensure accurate, well organized supporting documentation
- Support accounting for investment purchase and sale transactions, including diligence, agreement review, closing statements, treasury coordination, and transaction reporting
- Partner with the investment team to review portfolio valuations and support consistent valuation methodologies
- Evaluate, design, and implement process improvements and internal controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Calculate performance metrics including gross and net IRR and other fund level analytics
- Assist with investor communications and materials such as fundraising decks, annual meeting content, and marketing presentations
- Manage fund and management company cash activity, including capital calls, distributions, and bank reconciliations
- Oversee credit facilities used to bridge capital calls and manage related reporting
- Support tax compliance and planning by coordinating with external advisors, preparing audit deliverables, and overseeing allocation, return, and K 1 preparation
- Partner with senior leadership on special projects, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or similar certification preferred
- 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including meaningful exposure to fund reporting
- Proven ability to manage day-to-day accounting while driving process improvements and building scalable infrastructure
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills with a proactive, hands‑on approach
- Advanced Excel and accounting system experience; exposure to fund accounting platforms is a plus
